At Alston Primary School early reading is taught through our school's chosen programme, Read Write Inc.

The children are grouped according to their current level of development and are regularly assessed and re-grouped to ensure that they are taught at their individual challenge point.

Our teachers and experienced teaching assistants deliver the programme. This allows us to maintain small group sizes which contribute greatly to the effectiveness of the teaching.

In the 2026/27 academic year we are again lucky enough to be part of Orgill's English Hub which provides us with high-quality support and continuing professional development (CPD) to further strengthen our teaching of reading.

RWI supports our school to work in partnership with you at home. This includes books for home reading, information booklets and a Virtual Classroom with films for children to practise, if you would like any more information please follow the link below or contact one of the staff in school who would be more than happy to offer more support and advice about your child's reading journey.
