The 2026 statutory phonics screening check for Year 1 pupils in England will be administered during the week commencing Monday 8 June 2026 to Friday 12 June 2026

This means that our Year 1 learners will take the Phonics Screening Check during this week. The Phonics Screening Check is a statutory assessment designed to give teachers and parents information on how your child is progressing in phonics. It will help to identify whether your child needs additional support at this stage so that they do not fall behind in this vital early reading skill.

The Phonics Screening Check consists of 40 words for your child to read. 20 of those words are real words, and 20 are alien words (guidance below). Those children who do not pass in Year 1 will have the opportunity to retake in Year 2. Parents will be informed on their child’s progress in the Phonics Screening Check.

Mrs Brown will be handing out information leaflets during our parent meetings next week to explain more and also explain how we can work together to support the children to achieve the best that they can.

In the meantime please keep going with all of the fantastic reading that is going on at home and accessing the RWI sound clips that have been sent home to support filling the gaps in the sounds that the children aren't sure of. Any questions please just ask at parent meetings.
